Switching between the perspectives of Ashen and Ginger, book two begins where The Dark Ruby ends. Ginger can tell that Turmoil is no good and Ashen is struggling with problems of his own -- he feels as though the quest was the most important event of his life, and now that it is over, he is at a loss. Meanwhile, new dangers are becoming evident- could Alex's ominous talk of the open portal be a warning?
"Now go, run back to them."
"You're too aloof, too preocupied, too, too, too, to bother with us anymore!"
And it knew that it could not return to the great vault until it helped him, the one who gave its name, Thunder- a glorious word that sung under its wings as they flapped, a resonant pulse.
"Oh joy, another prophecy."
"A goulish beast that drinks, rinks, inks the blood of the dead!"
"Soon we will be at the mercy of the river."
"As you know, Soutcoal, I am a cynic and is by my nature to not believe what I am told. But I would like to think that you are both honest."

"It's not what I am," she paused as a tile shifted under her great talons. "It's whom."
